Uniting the region through a shared passion for sportsmanship and excellence, the Region VIII State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) officially commenced its 39th edition at the Leyte Sports Development Center on Monday, April 21.

The opening ceremony gathered delegations from 11 state universities and colleges (SUCs) across Eastern Visayas, setting the tone for spirited competition and camaraderie among student-athletes.

Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) President Dr. Dennis de Paz highlighted SCUAA as a platform for strengthening unity and fostering regional pride among participating institutions.

“Let us take pride in what our region offers not only in terms of athletic excellence but in the strength of our unity and the promise of our future,” said Dr. de Paz.

Meanwhile, Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) Region VIII President Dr. Victor CaƱezo Jr. emphasized that the gathering brings student-athletes together under shared values despite diverse backgrounds.

“Sports is a unique power to unite people. It teaches us that while we may come from different campuses and provinces, we are by common values. Respect fairness, and teamwork. In every match, we played with honor and every handshake are fair, after a game, and every cheer for a teammate,”

The ceremony started with ‘Pakulo’ performance of the participating SUCs through athletes’ dance routine, cheering their school pride and spirit.

The ceremonial torch lighting followed, led by Dr. de Paz alongside University of the Philippines Tacloban College (UPTC) Dean Dr. Patricia Arinto and Leyte Normal University (LNU) President Dr. Gil Nicetas Villarino, formally signaling the start of the multi-day sporting event.

Moreover, the Samleyaw Performing Group showcased cultural and artistic performances, with EVSU student-performers deliverinh a light-infused dance presentation, captivating the audience with glow-in-the-dark elements and illuminated props that created a visually striking display.

In an interview with The Industrial Wheel, Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT) Sea Lions softball player Rea Cometa shared that her motivation stems from giving back to her coaches and honoring their collective efforts.

“My inspiration in doing this sport is because our team wants to give back to our coach before. And for our present coach, too. It is also for our hard work, sacrifices, and training,” Cometa shared.

Student-athletes are set to compete in various sporting events scheduled across different venues in Tacloban City and Palo, Leyte, until Friday, April 24.
