Lando Norris snatched pole position from George Russell in a dramatic finish to qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix, edging the Mercedes driver by just 0.102 seconds at Circuit Zandvoort, Saturday, August 22.
Heading into the final minutes, several drivers still had a realistic shot at pole as changing weather conditions kept the qualifying session wide open.
Norris, however, stayed out for one final flying lap despite the threat of rain and produced a 1:11.163 to move to the top of the timesheets.
Russell came closest to denying the McLaren driver, clocking a 1:11.265 to secure second place on the grid.
Meanwhile, Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli also impressed, posting a 1:11.296 to complete an all-Mercedes second row.
Oscar Piastri settled for fourth after looking like the driver to beat for much of qualifying, finishing only 0.142 seconds behind Norris.
Further down the order, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc followed in fifth and sixth, respectively, after both drivers remained in contention throughout the session.
At his home Grand Prix, Max Verstappen could manage only seventh as the Red Bull driver struggled to match the pace at the front.
Behind Verstappen, Liam Lawson claimed eighth, while Gabriel Bortoleto and Arvid Lindblad rounded out the top 10.
As the weather continued to threaten the session, Norris’ decision to make one last run proved decisive in the battle for pole position.
With the clock winding down, the McLaren driver delivered the lap that denied Russell and Antonelli a Mercedes front-row lockout.
The result handed Norris the best possible starting position for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix after another tightly contested qualifying session.
