Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape secured the Philippines’ fourth gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games after defeating Vietnam’s Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang, 2-0, in the mixed individual virtual taekwondo final at Toyohashi Gymnasium, Friday, October 2.
Yape dominated the opening round, scoring 500 hit points while holding Chau scoreless.
He maintained his advantage in the second round, posting 620 hit points to complete the sweep and seal the gold medal.
The event uses virtual reality headsets and motion-tracking sensors, allowing athletes to control avatars in a non-contact digital combat arena.
Yape reached the final after defeating opponents from Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Kazakhstan.
The gold added to Yape’s medal haul after he won bronze in the men’s individual poomsae on Thursday.
Virtual taekwondo made its Asian Games debut as a medal sport in the 2026 edition.
