Reclaiming the championship after three years, the School of Education (SED) of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU)–Main Campus secured this year’s University Students’ Welcome Activity & Gathering (USWAG) championship at the Open Field, Friday, September 11.
The SED freshmen showcased their school spirit in royal blue through powerful chants and an eagle-inspired presentation during the USWAG Chant and Yell Competition.
Dareen Tagpis, performer from SED taking up Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education (BCAED), shared his emotions after helping the school reclaim the championship title this year.
“Halo-halo an amon emotion kay deri kami naexpect na machampion kami kay an amon chant very slow pero still, ginhimo la namon an amon best. Tapos, very grateful gihap kay nabalik na ha amon an championship.” Tagpis shared.
Meanwhile, in an interview with The Industrial Wheel, Celestine Sy, USWAG Coordinator from SED, expressed her reaction to the school’s victory, marking its second championship title in the annual competition.
“Shock in a sense na for years nabalik namon an crown, kay ha previous years puro Best in Choreography la kami,” Sy said.
Sy also discussed the school’s preparations and the changes incorporated into this year’s presentation.
“We were eyeing and pushing to have props kaya now diri na kami bare and bumawi kami. This year, gin-combine namon an props and choreo,” she added.
She likewise credited their school dean for providing consistent support throughout their preparations.
“Of course, we’re thankful ha amon Dean na very supportive since day-one kay gusto niya ha every meeting aadto hiya, involved hiya, ngan always napakiana kumusta preparation,” she said.
The USWAG kicked off with the USWAG Walk, as freshmen marched around the university grounds while raising their chants and yells ahead of the program opening.
The program commenced with musical and dance performances, followed by messages from university key officials and school deans.
Meanwhile, University President Dr. Dennis C. de Paz welcomed the freshmen, highlighting the university as a community that supports their growth and encourages them to pursue their aspirations in his USWAG message.
“To our dear freshmen, USWAG kamo ha EVSU because indeed, we are your new home now. Welcome to a university that believes in your potential. Welcome to a community that will challenge you to grow, encourage you to dream bigger, and stand with you as you pursue your aspirations,” de Paz said.
The School of Accountancy, Management, and Entrepreneurship (SAME) secured the first runner-up title, while the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) placed second runner-up.
SED also secured the Best in Choreography and Best in Chant and Yell awards, while SAS received the Best in Muse and Escort award.
USWAG is an annual university activity that welcomes freshmen through performances and competitions designed to foster school spirit and student engagement, concluding this year’s Charter Anniversary celebration.
