CEBU CITY, Philippines—Students from the Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering (BSECE) of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) – Main Campus placed fourth in the ECE Fest 2026 Interscholastic Quiz Show held at SM Seaside on Saturday, October 17.
Representing EVSU in the competition were Sophia Bianca Daga, Charles Justine Oledan, and Ivann Emmanuel Bormate, along with their coach, Engr. Aaron Sabela.
The quiz show registered eight participating schools from across the country, with the University of San Carlos (USC) clinching first place, Cebu Technological University (CTU) securing second place, and Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT) placing third.
The EVSU delegates garnered 120 points, tying with CIT and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) for a clincher round for third place where CIT advanced by scoring 20 points in the round, landing EVSU in fourth place.
In an interview, Daga shared that the competition served as a turning point for the team, highlighting the importance of preparation as they came close to securing a bronze finish.
“After the event, the three of us already knew that this quiz show would be a turning point in our lives. Not only because we came so close to winning bronze, but also because there were errors and mistakes along the way that could have been prevented if we had known better and prepared more,” she shared.
She added that balancing their academic responsibilities with competition preparations was challenging, crediting their coach for helping them address gaps in their knowledge.
“We struggled to keep up, especially with the demands of our courses this semester, but we managed to work our way through it. Special thanks to our coach, who went the extra mile to fill in our information and knowledge gaps,” she added.
Meanwhile, Engr. Sabela expressed confidence in the team’s knowledge and ability to compete with other universities, noting that the crowd’s support also affected the team’s morale during the competition.
“I believe the team was already ready to take on the questions at that time. I have no problems with their education and we can clearly see that the team can go toe to toe with the other universities. It’s just that while the morale of the other teams get strengthened everytime they get the answer right, our team doesn’t get a large cheer from the crowd. Igo la kami magyakan nam iba nga upod nga taga cebu hin ‘Go EVSU, Ahu Ahu!'” the coach shared.
The event was organized by the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP)–Cebu Chapter and the IECEP Student Chapter, featuring other competitions, including the Math Olympiad, CommQuest, and Elite Electronics Showdown.
