
University’s Student Publication Office (SPO) – The Industrial Wheel held its day two of the Retooling Activity to re-equip its editorial staff for future journalism competitions, delving into Photojournalism and Sports Writing at the New College of Business and Entrepreneurship (COBE) Building Function Hall 2, Friday, September 22.
Photojournalism resource speaker, Mr. Eduardo Tiquen Jr., an internationally award-winning photojournalist, recapitulated the fundamentals of photography to the staff during the morning session of the activity.
In his lecture, he introduced the art of photojournalism and its importance, discussed the different compositions that should be incorporated in a photo, and handed out tips to better capture moments.
“Dapat mayda istorya. Another, kailangan unique ang anggulo mo, dapat anggulo ang art mo. So, dapat lagyan mo ng art. How to add art in photography? Use the composition,” Mr. Tiquen elaborated.
Moreover, he shared that applying the compositions of photography that he discussed can make a “winning photo.”
Annesa Jean Rama, a junior photojournalist in the publication commended the photojournalism seminar, especially on how it helped enhance her skills with a detailed discussion of the topic.
“Dako talaga an bulig han seminar ngan workshop na ginhimo ni Sir Ed, kay gintutdo talaga niya tanan, from fundamentals, compositions, ngan importance han photography,” Rama stated.
Meanwhile, anchorman and sportscaster of RMN Tacloban, Mr. Kevin Siosana, shared his tips and experiences in sports writing by establishing his actual experiences in sports coverage in the region.
He added that a journo who has eyes for news and has an interest in a lot of sports events is a characteristic of an excellent sports writer.
“A sports writer must have a working knowledge of the language and jargon of sports writing usually referred to as sports lingo. You should also avoid cliché phrases. ‘Yong mga nakasanayan na natin na palagi na lang mine-mention, kailangan mo mag-discover hin style mo para diri masumhan an nagbabasa,” Siosana expressed.
A junior sports writer, Andre Estopa, shared his comments about the session and commended the speaker because, despite the casual lecture, the speaker made them comfortable in learning the topic.
“First of all, very practical hiya nga lecture and very useful in terms ha aton as journalists sa campus, kasi not only we learned how to write a sports but also nabaruan naton an insight kun ano ba talaga an reyalidad han media ngan kun paano ba talaga nagwo-work an usa nga local media reporter and writer.” Estopa stated.
Following the lectures, speakers conducted a workshop in the two tackled campus journalism fields to assess how the staff would apply the learnings and tips they have gained.
