TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte – In commemoration of the resilience shown 11 years after Super Typhoon Yolanda, EVSUnistas gathered for a university-wide prayer and candle-lighting vigil at the Administrative Building on Thursday, November 7, to honor the victims and survivors of the disaster.
Said event, themed “Paghud-ong, Pagbáyaw, Paghalad: Panahon hin Pagtuo ngan Paglaom” (To Look On, To Raise, To Offer: A Time of Faith and Hope), began with the Holy Rosary, led by SASO Director Dr. Sonia Enrile and Dr. Severo Blanco.
Further, the program featured a variety of performances, including song and dance tributes by the university’s performing arts groups, along with video presentations that showcased the victims’ struggles while celebrating the resilience and hope of the survivors.
The ceremony was led by the university’s Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), Dr. Lydia M. Morante, alongside other key officials, faculty, and staff.
Dr. Morante also performed the wreath laying ceremony and delivered her ‘Pulong han Pagkaurusa,’ where she underscored the resilience of the affected communities and emphasized the strength of the people in the face of disaster.
“Together, we can build a stronger and more resilient EVSU, ensuring the legacy of those affected by Typhoon Yolanda is one of hope, healing, and progress,” she asserted.
Dr. Morante further highlighted the importance of disaster resiliency and the continuous commitment to helping one another through collective efforts.
Furthermore, a key moment of the gathering was the candle lighting ceremony, where attendees lit candles and offered prayers for healing, peace, and the victims of the typhoon.
Meanwhile, Yumiko Manuel Estañero, an Electrical Engineering freshman and Yolanda survivor, reflected on the lessons he learned from the devastation during the commemorative event.
“To be resilient despite the challenges we face, and to be more understanding and helpful toward others,” he shared.
Esteñero also expressed his gratitude to the university for organizing such a meaningful event that honors both the victims and survivors of the disaster.
