Transcending generations and evoking a profound sense of nostalgia and connection to our roots, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) delegate Joylly Ann Plaza won first place, besting other State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), in the Vocal Solo (Kundiman) Contest in the Music category of the PASUC-8 Regional Festival 2023, Thursday, October 19 at Visayas State University (VSU) Convention Center.

Plaza connected with her audience through a melancholic embrace as she delivered a heartfelt performance of Jose Estrella’s ‘Malungkot na Maya’.

Moreover, she noted that behind her performance were cramped preparations they have fitted into a short time, which was only a week prior to her actual performance in the PASUC-8.

“Actually, we had only a short preparation; it took us only one week to prepare. I was initially undecided because I also have academic obligations in my civil engineering program”, said Plaza.

She was also grateful to everyone who played a role in the success of her performance.

“I am very grateful, especially to my co-choir members in the Manila Chamber Singers, to LNHS Vocal Chorus, and the Sinirangan Chamber Singers in Tacloban, as well as my classmates and professors.” she said.

She also hoped that she will still receive the same amount of support in her future endeavors.

Meanwhile, Maria Christen Dagami, the pianist of Plaza, was very happy and priviledged to be recognized by the region as well as EVSU.

“I am happy, especially since it’s our first time joining this kind of event. It’s a privilege to be recognized by the region, of course, EVSU.” said Dagami.

Coached by Mr. John Mark Esperas, Plaza is the first delegate of the university to clinch the gold medal for this year’s Regional Culture and the Arts Festival.
