Degrees and Decisions

Choosing a degree program in college is often perceived as a crucial step in one’s academic journey, sometimes accompanied by a comprehensive decision-making process or an early career aspiration. Some individuals possess a clear vision of their desired professional path from a young age, while others embark on this path without a definite future profession in mind. For some students, they are still in the process of self-assessment, trying to find a balance between various aspects to determine which degree will lead them to the right career path in the future.

In a recent episode of “BAKIT-List?”—the weekly segment of The Industrial Wheel where EVSUnista was asked about a certain issue—the topic centered around students explaining why they chose their program. Various responses emerged, including students who ended up with an alternative program as their only option. However, among the responses, Niño of BSIT, one of the interviewees, garnered a variety of reactions online. He chose his college course because his mother wanted it for him, stating, “kay amo an sugo ni mama.” Whether mixed with a joke or reflecting reality, it still received 400+ mixed reactions from Facebook users online.

Moreover, not long after the release of the said segment, I went around asking some of my friends why they chose their program. I received multiple responses about deciding on their college program based on personal preference and interests before entering college. In my case, I couldn’t remember deciding while considering factors such as those mentioned. However, when I was about to decide where I wanted to enroll, what I considered was the adaptability of the program, providing skills that work in different jobs to prepare myself for various challenges in the workforce.

I admit that I was unsure of where I would be heading at first, but eventually, it made me realize that my “quick-paced decision” would lead to a fulfilling journey. As I approach my last semester of my college academic journey, I’ve come to appreciate it during the process of my academic endeavors. While I may have had hesitations at first, my years appreciating the program have led to an enriching expedition.

We all have different ways of choosing our college program and the factors that we weigh. If you happen to reconsider or have a change of heart, remember that it’s never too late to go where you feel like you are in the right place. As Richard Bach said, “You are always free to change your mind and choose a different future or a different past.” This is a reminder that if our heart is pulling us in a different direction, it’s okay to change our minds about what we really want to pursue. It’s like getting a fresh start in our academic journey. Just as we can shape our future, we can also pick a degree that fits our current passions and goals.

Again, college is full of surprises. We experience things we never expected and are challenged to be at our best. However, I encourage all of you to write your story in a way that brings you happiness and fulfillment.
