Industrial Wheel nabs 24 out of 29 awards in RTSPC-8, ranked 2nd best campus press

BAYBAY CITY, Leyte – The Industrial Wheel, the official tertiary student publication of Eastern Visayas State Univesity – Main Campus, bagged a total of 24 awards in group and individual contests during the awarding ceremony of the Regional Tertiary Schools Press Conference (RTSPC-8), held at the Visayas State University (VSU), April 6.

Represented by 16 editorial staffers from the said publication, the campus journalists convened and competed with over 300 campus journalists from 28 campus publications in Region 8.

Student Publications Office Head and publication Technical Adivser Rex Palompon expressed his admiration for the editorial staff’s achievement.

“Overwhelmingly, IW garnered 24 out of 29 awards both in the individual and group contests. The Wheelers proved once again that they don’t sit on their laurels but keep on reinventing themselves for the greater good,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, The Industrial Wheel’s Editor-in-Chief Ton Sierolf Cairo expressed his satisfaction and pride in the publication and staff’s performance during the RTSPC-8.

“I’m glad to see that the publication is actually doing well compared to the performance of the whole Eastern Visayas, because imagine, we bagged 24 out of 29 awards. It really shows that even in and out of the competition, journalists from our publication are remarkable writers, remarkable creatives, overall remarkable journalists,” he said.

Individual Contest Awards

For the individual category contests, The Industrial Wheel won 11 awards, with competition from eight editorial staff members from the publication.

1st Place Investigative Writing (English) – Ton Sierolf Cairo

1st Place Investigative Writing (Filipino) – Carol Morados

2nd Place Feature Writing (English) – Meraflor Pecore

2nd Place Sports Writing (English) – Patrick Joseph Dincol

3rd Place Sports Writing (Filipino) – Agustino Rico

3rd Place News Writing (Filipino) – Carol Morados

3rd Place Photojournalism (English) – Keannu Ruiz

3rd Place Science Writing (English) – Rustle King Embodo

3rd Place Developmental Writing (English) – Ton Sierolf Cairo

5th Place Opinion Writing (Filipino) – Meraflor Pecore

5th Place Copyreading and Headline Writing (English) – Alrey John Lacaba

Group Contest Awards

The publication dominated the print category of the group contests, securing all slots with victories in various subcategories: Best Creative Folio and Best Special Publication, 1st runner-up for Best Tabloid, and both 2nd runner-up positions for Best Newsletter and Best Magazine.

Further, in the online category of the group contests, the publication clinched the 1st runner-up as the Best Social Networking Site and the 4th runner-up for the Best Website.

The video entries of the publication also gained numerous awards after winning 1st runner-up for the Best Promotional Video and Best V-log, both 3rd runner-up for Best Documentary Film and Best Social Video.

Meanwhile, the publication’s radio broadcasting team, dubbed DYUU Balitang Uswag Nationwide 75.1 kHz, claimed the 3rd runner-up spot in the Best Radio News Bulletin, where Agustino Rico, the publication’s Managing Editor, attained the Best News Presenter award.

The publication secured the 1st runner-up spot as Best Campus Press for State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) Main Campuses category.
