To formally welcome its new set of writers and creatives, Eastern Visayas State University – Main Campus Student Publications Office (SPO), The Industrial Wheel, conducted a publication orientation on Friday, May 5, at the SPO Office.

Said orientation, attended by 14 out of 18 new recruits, aimed to create an in-depth understanding of the office’s structure, departments, and operations among new ‘Wheelers.’

Prof. Rex B. Palompon, SPO Head concurrent Technical Adviser, graced the said orientation as he shared to the newcomers the challenges they will encounter in the office, the expectations and sacrifices it will demand, and the level of commitment to the publication.

“After three months, we’ll see who remains in the publication. After six months, we’ll see who stays in the publication. After one year, we’ll see who believes in the publication,” Prof. Palompon said.

In addition, the publication adviser also advised the neophytes to expand their arsenal by learning other journalism-related skills, noting that “versatility is a character of excellence.”

Moreover, Mr. Ton Sierolf Cairo, Associate Editor of The Industrial Wheel, followed through as he discussed the publication’s workflow, editorial board, assessment and evaluations, and house rules.

Meanwhile, Editor-in-Chief Erwin Elicot Jr., now in his second tenure of leading the office, capped off the orientation by sharing his experiences as a rookie and the steps he took to be a well-rounded campus journalist.

The new Wheelers, who all passed the interview and competitive examinations the SPO conducted on April, are about to undergo on a one-year probationary period where they will be mentored by their corresponding seniors before being evaluated for promotion.

“Naka-feel ak hin challenge han nagyakan na hi Mister about commitment, pero willing ak ma-challenge kay para akon man lat adto improvement,” said Mariahaidee Java, Junior Photojournalist.
