Have you ever been asked by a College Senior why you chose this major to study while thinking of applying for admission to the University?

This question is not to discourage or make freshmen, sophomores, and juniors feel inferior and doubt their decisions but to guide a student through a process of weighing the pros and cons.

Undoubtedly, college is a big step up from high school. A student makes course selection decisions with varied return expectations, but also with a perception of the risk that those expectations will not be realized.

This line of thinking leads students to be stuck in the middle of two different paths and need to take a big leap on the vague directionality of the middle. The wholly undesirable trait of being indecisive makes it even more difficult to solve the puzzle. Wanting to know the Whys can result in a sudden awareness of not being able to find the words to express or wish to say.

Simple as it may sound, a class fellow can enumerate reasons, yet it still creates hesitation in one’s ability to act and advance. Someone who is already in junior year may share that it is the moment when he is expected to respond to questions and is expected to pose questions of his own. Because of this curiosity to acquire enough information, he ends up on the trail between something that he has to do due to society’s beliefs or something that he wants and loves to do.

From this perspective, choosing a college major may start as a career that not only aligns with passions but also provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Others look deep into the realities of life; they tend to choose to be practical in all their actions. There are also those who at first disliked their major but transitioned to excelling in their class. Some opt for what sounds good to hear, and everybody else is never afraid of chasing after their big dreams but also think and consider planning realistic goals along the way.

However, the turning point of making a definite decision, and not making a decision will force someone else to decide. Sometimes it is also crucial to balance one’s aspirations with practical considerations.

And everything falls on the concept of choosing. It is sometimes the worst place to be but also an interesting avenue to try new things, regardless of what field the students picked, the end of the story remains in their hands.

The query of the Senior Student needs to be unfolded, and if only time permits, is the student still going to choose the same Major he has right now or rewrite his journey? There could be a lot of motivations and reasons to continue and pursue desires, but the presence of realities affects the student’s art of choosing.
