Outgoing Education Secretary Leonor Briones has formally ushered in Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio as the secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) in a turnover ceremony yesterday, July 4 at DepEd Central Office in Pasig City.

The ceremonial turnover, which was done during the ‘Pasasalamat at Pagpupugay’ event, was conducted to formally introduce the Vice President to DepEd, a cabinet position prior tasked to her by President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.

VP Sarah was handed the DepEd flag and its official seal, as well as a copy of the Basic Education Development Plan 2030, a long term plan for the education sector.

In a speech, she emphasized her appreciation of Briones, and said that she is honored to have succeeded her.

“And I am humbled and honored to follow in the footsteps of a much-admired academic, public servant, social activist, and change-maker,” she said.

VP Sara draws inspiration from Briones as she takes the helm of the educational institution.

“And as I take on the task of being the next Secretary of the Department of Education, I take inspiration from you — from your courage, dedication, your commitment, your integrity, selflessness, and your grace.”

Meanwhile, Briones will stay as consultant to the department during Duterte-Carpio’s stint.
