Raising the flagship of ‘Love and Elements’, the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) Alugyaw Dance Company earned a silver medal in the Contemporary Dance competition of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) Regional Culture and Arts Festival 2023, October 19, at the Visayas State University (VSU) Research, Development, and Extension (RDE) Hall.
Inspired by the “Elemental’ movie, the EVSU Alugyaw Dance Company portrayed an unrequited story between fire and water elements which conveys a message of letting go.
According to the Coach and Director of Alugyaw Dance Company, Roxy Bandejo, their piece reflects a message of allowing oneself to let go and move on.
“The message of the performance is basically letting go. We have to let go of things especially if it’s good for us. We have to move forward because not all the things we want would make others happy or yourself happy. If that’s not meant for you then you have to find your own pace nalang, and let go, just move on,” coach Bandejo expressed.
With this, they were able to let go of the pangs of dismay as they fell short of clenching the gold.
“In our mind, we aim for gold, but we land second place. It’s okay. We considered ourselves as winners and even though it was second place, it was still a great experience [sa amua]. Second place is not bad, it is our first time to join regional PASUC and the title is madala namo sya, and I am proud that our learnings nga nakuha is mapasa namo sya sa amuang Juniors,” Alugyaw Dance Company member, Caren Zel Alba said.
As their performance left an impact on the viewers, it equally rendered a lesson to themselves to come back with the same goal, but of better intensity of prowess and sophistication that would offer them a chance to surpass their performance and best other competitors in the arena of contemporary dancing.
“If there is EVSUlympics, Alugyaw Dance Company will be better and stronger for the next battle,” Alba emphasized.
With their experiences and lessons gained, the silver medalist contemporary dancers of the university anticipate performing in the same competition and snatching the golden victory by carrying the principle of learning from experiences.
“If you have experience you have something to compare and improve,” Coach Bandejo asserted.
