Embodying a combination of technique, speed, power, and control, Estern Visayas State University’s (EVSU) athletes for Karate-Do in the Kumite category put on a sterling performance, garnering multiple placements during the Karate-Do tournament, of this year’s Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Meet held at Visayas State University (VSU) in Baybay City, Leyte, on October 25.
EVSU’s karatekas showcased their might by securing a total of 10 podium finishes in both Men’s and Women’s categories, including one gold in the Men’s Team Kumite and two in Individual Women’s.
Armando Bacolod, Darwin Bacaltos, Jonard Labitag, Francisco Pacne, Raymundo Dacoba, John Madrazo, and Joshua Rojas led the Men’s Team Kumite, defeating delegates from the Palompon Institute of Technology (PIT).
Additionally, Angelica Tablatin and Arlyn Santos dominated the Individual Women’s Kumite, each winning a gold medal in their respective categories.
Moreover, Marian Asma, Angelica Castillo, Andrea Mae Sanico, Rhena Mae Darnayla, and Angelica Tablatin secured silver medals in the Women’s Team Kumite. Rhena Mae Darnayla and Andrea Mae Sanico also won silver medals in the Women’s Kumite Individual category.
Meanwhile, Darwin Bacaltos, Armando Bacolod, Joshua Rojas, and Arvedhen Luay finished with bronze medals.
Mr. Jonathan Mañas, the Head Coach of the EVSU Karate-Do team, expressed his fulfillment while acknowledging that some of the athletes might lack certain skills, particularly as beginners.
“We feel fulfilled as they applied everything they learned during their training, although some may be lacking, especially since some are beginners,” said Mañas.
He added that the team needs more training and experience in tournaments outside of school to prepare for the upcoming National State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (NSCUAA) Meet.
The team is also being coached by Mr. Mark Anthony Parkosa and Mr. Rey Roland Macauba.
