Expressing her creativity and unique perspectives on how modern civilization affects nature, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) delegate Mary Alexane Montesclaros secured third place in the Essay Writing Contest for the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC-8) Regional Culture and the Arts Festival 2023, October 18, at the Visayas State University (VSU), RDE Hall.

Montesclaros emerged among other state universities and colleges as her essay gave emphasis and reminisced on the Flores de Mayo tradition and the fading enthusiasm for it, and linked this to the changing connection to Mother Nature.

Moreover, she encourages people to treat the environment better by expressing a desire to recapture the joy of their childhood in May, a month symbolizing new beginnings, in her winning piece.

Upon winning the competition, she expressed her happiness, noting that the victory was unexpected given the level of preparation she had put in.

“I was so happy because it was really unexpected given the amount of preparation I had. Prayers, prayers moved my ideas and pen talaga, I thank God for this win,” said Montesclaros.

Montesclaros, coached by Professor Georgina M. Orbeta, is the second participant coming from EVSU who won in the Literary Arts events of the PASUC-8 Regional Festival in the Literary Arts category.
