
Green, a shade in the spectrum between yellow and blue. Emblematizes growth, harmony, fertility and sustainability, it embodies the nature and its tranquility. As the month of November celebrates the Natural Awareness Month, the Eastern Visayas State University joined the celebration with a Commemorative Tree Planting of the fourth University President, Dr. Dennis C. De Paz last November 30, 2021. Deans, administrators, faculty members’, and campus directors joined the university president in planting their sprouts as they all pledged to take care not just of the plants they planted but our very own mother nature itself.
However, on this years’ Natural Awareness Month Celebration, a sprout that was planted years ago finally bloomed. With his modesty, patience and hard work all throughout his academic journey after obtaining his baccalaureate degree in Statistics from the Visayas State College of Agriculture, now Visayas State University. He took units in Master in Management at the Leyte Normal University, shifted gears and finished his Master of Science in Statistics in the University of the Philippines – Diliman in 2001 as a scholar of the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE). He continued his academic journey and earned his Doctor of Philosophy, major in Educational Program Management at the Eastern Visayas State University. With this prolific academic qualifications, fine wide array of experiences and eagerness to serve he was designated to the top-level administrative positions at the Eastern Visayas State University, Head of the Mathematics and Statistics Department and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. His managerial experience as a college provost made him the OIC – Director for Zonal Computerization Center NBC #461 for Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges – Region 8. From February 2016 to May 2017, he became the Officer-In-Charge to the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the University. Shortly after, he was given the trust and confidence to serve as the Vice President for Academic Affairs while holding post as the Director of ZCC – NBC #461 and Head of the Statistics Department.
His passion to serve and natural love for learning continued to ignite, he has continuously affiliated with various academic organizations as an active executive member. He served as Vice President of the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI) – Eastern Visayas Chapter and as a member of the Philippine Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology (PHILAAST) and the Mathematics Association of the Philippines (MTAP-TL). With his work experiences and exposure, he is a respected accreditor of the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc., the Regional Quality Assessment Team (RQAT) of the Commission on Higher Education Office 8 and an Auditor of the University Internal Quality Audit Team (UIQAT) for ISO 9001:2015. In addition, he serves as a consultant for the SRTC Regional Training Affiliates, Statistical Research Training Center in Manila and an MPEX Trainer for ISSI-DOST, Tacloban City. With an Academic Rank of Professor V, he successfully published researches in institutional and CHED Accredited journals and authored books, modules and work texts in the field of Mathematics and Statistics now in circulation.
As an attestation for his hard work and dedication to the academe, he was 2004 EVSU Educator of the Year and a Faculty Development Program Grantee of then Leyte Institute of Technology (LIT). Recently, he was recognized by this University for his 25 meritorious years of service during the EVSU Service Awards. Despite the top-level positions and achievements, his foot remained on the ground. Despite being multi-hyphenated he still managed to make time to hear out the student’ and faculties’ apprehensions.
On this year, this sprout was finally able to grow and stand out. A tree that was finally able stand taller and firmer continuously providing a wider shade to those who weren’t on one, with his reign expect EVSU to grow taller, bolder and fruitful for we are led by our very own University President, Dr. Dennis Carinea de Paz.
